Having fun?????

It has been a year of so many other things happening - other than creating jewellery. I love making jewellery. I really do. Or should I say I used to? I find it very hard to take that first step of moving myself out of the house and into the workshop. Once I am there I do enjoy it but I also have days where I will find excuses for leaving to do other things – even boring household chores! Why is this? I have been wondering about this for a long time. It has always been my dream to create jewellery, so why do I find excuses to do other things when the possibility to spend time creating is there? Is it my fear of not doing things perfectly? Or the fact that nothing is ever as easy as I have imagined? No, I actually think I have found out what it is. Because this did not use to be a problem for me. So what has changed? I think it all changed when I tried to build the jewellery creating into a business. And the thought process around the creating bit totally changed. It used to be a play with materials and shapes and just having FUN. But suddenly other things like what can I sell, who is my target group and what do they like, what is in fashion etc. came into consideration. It is more about productivity and what sells.
Can you see what was lost along the way? The having fun part. And having fun has a major impact on the creative process. It is time to get back to having fun!
So workshop… I come

To all you other creative people and small business owners; how do you keep up the motivation?

Old, but exciting

As some of you may know; I sell jewellery supplies from my website:
Last year before Christmas I was contacted with a request to include some of the items that I sell in an article in Creative Beading magazine. I know this is old news; however in the busy time back then I didn't get around to sharing this with you. And I can tell you that I was extremely excited.
They even included a photo of the knitted wire tubing that I sell:

It is those little nice surprises, like this opportunity to be included in an article, that make life so much more fun.
I will now get back to enjoying my glass of red wine on this relatively boring Saturday evening whilst I dream of more nice surprises for the future.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

More TAFE  projects.

I thought I would share the final result of my wax carved ring with you. I realized that my design was not the easiest to clean after being cast. There are lots of spots and grooves that are hard to get into. I ended up using an engraver in some of the grooves to make them smooth and that worked well. And  after the final emery and polish; this is what it looks like:

The next project is a four claw ring. I am currently working on the setting - it is a very little thing to hold and so much detail to work on. I hope you can imagine from the photo how tiny it is:
That is all the jewellery work I have had time for this week.

I hope you are all having a great weekend.

Where did the last 6 months go? I cannot believe that it was January when I last wrote on  my blog. Sorry folks. Guess it is time for an update.
If you spot a lot of extra "spaces" in between the words  -  this is thanks to my laptop - it hasn't fully recovered from a fall a little while back. I probably could have predicted that  when the kids almost took over my laptop. Well, at least now I have it all to myself again.
Not much has happened in designing jewellery. I have started working and still study at TAFE and that does not leave a lot of time for my jewellery. I have managed to finish a couple of orders and that is about it.
At TAFE, I of course spend all my time learning amazing new techniques and skills for  jewellery making and designing. So I thought I would share a bit of that with you.

This is a wax carving for a ring. Some of my fellow students made some amazing intricate carvings. I tried to keep it more simple to be able to finish it on time.

Probably a little hard to see the details, but this is the wax carving (along with other rings) after it has been cast. Now there is just the cleaning of the ring to do when I return next term.

And this is from my drawing lessons at TAFE. We  had to make a design with a boulder opal.

All from here. Hope you all have a fantastic and creative week.

It is easy to make the plan to clean the studio....... But there are of course other things than the studio that need attention. So to realize the plan is a very different story. First we had to go and look for blinds for the laundry that we are in the middle of renovating and then the kids needed a LOT of encouragement to get their chores done and then....... Well, let us just say that I am very proud that I actually managed to spend a whole hour in the studio on Sunday. So I am not finished but at least I have started.

The way to a tidy studio

I am still working on the tidying up and organising. Doing little steps every day seems to work for me and I am actually very proud of my achievements so far. I have just received "The Clutter-Busting Handbook" that I bought on-line a week ago (From the Bookdepository in the UK). Great reading so far - keeps me motivated! I have not gotten to the de-cluttering of the studio yet. I have found a lot of stuff inside the house that should actually be in the studio and I have bought, saved and found containers to help sort out all the bits and pieces I have collected over the years. So tomorrow it is time to get started. My studio is in the garage and I share it with spiders who like to surprise me with their webs. I should probably tell you that I do NOT like spiders - I am working on accepting the fact that no matter how much I try to get rid of them that is not going to happen. At the moment there are a few "suprise"- webs that I need to remove. So I have to be brave tomorrow! Can't wait till it is all clean and tidy and ready for a new year's creative work.

A new year

Wonder if you have any new year resolutions? My first one (yes, I have a few) is to get the house and my studio organized so I don't waste so much time trying to find stuff. Interesting to see if it makes a change at the end of the year.
